Athlete of the Month – March 2021 – Andrew Bruckler

Say “hi” to Andrew!
Meet Andrew, he’s been at triathlon for three years after doing his first triathlon in 2018, the N. Myrtle Beach Sprint Trifecta, where he placed 1st in Clydesdale division. Andrew says his favorite race was Challenge Daytona because he used to be in Nascar and would be down there for the races. Then he got to do a triathlon on that historical piece of property. Very cool experience! His training/racing tip would be, “You do not have to spend a lot to have success”. Well said Andrew!

Athlete of the Month – Feb 2021 – Cheryl Scott

Say “hi” to Cheryl!
See that smiling face and warm wave, that’s Cheryl Scott!

She has been a triathlete for 11 years now and still yearning for more. She started with Dixie Diva Sprint Tri in 2010, a local favorite that raised money for Team Erica (it has since been discontinued).

Cheryl has done many races, including Beach 2 Battleship full Ironman distance. She says she enjoys the laid back vibe of those triathlons where camping is encouraged with tents, campers, lots of cow bell and the start of race is right outside your tent or cabin door.

To get pumped up for races, she loves watching the video “Triathlon Ironman-Till I collapse” on Youtube by Romain Riviere .

Two great training/racing tips she has are:
Push yourself out of your comfort zone as that is where your growth comes from.

If you put in the training, you WILL be ready for the race even if you’re doubting yourself… You ARE Ready!! Stay positive and visualize how you will attack the day. “

Great tips Cheryl!!

She has been “tri-ing” for “fourish” years now and enjoys the olympic distances the most. Her favorite meal before a race is a juicy hamburger, oh yeah! When training, she says her key workouts are, “Saturday group rides and long solo runs keep me sane and balanced in life. My recent new love is trail running. I have just started this in the last 6 months. I love the solidarity in nature.”

Athlete of the Month – Oct 2020 – Tom Siebold

Say “hi” to Tom!
Tom is a staple on the team, you see him at races, training rides and usually it is with his wife, Kim (pictured with him in case you didn’t know who that was, haha). Tom has been doing triathlons for 15 years now, and not slowing down! His favorite race was the Racine 70.3, “I liked the swim in Lake Michigan and the run in the bluffs.” He also recommends “80/20 Triathlon”, (Matt Fitzgerald) and Joe Friel as a good source for training. If you have a moment to chat with Tom, you will find his witty humor entertaining and that he doesn’t take himself too seriously in triathlon, but enjoys taking training, “slow and easy”. Thanks Tom!

Athlete of the Month – Aug 2020 – Marty Owens

Marty is the Director of Track & Field, Cross Country and Women’s Triathlon @ Guilford College, and has been involved with triathlon since 1991.
His first triathlon was Ocean City Triathlon in New Jersey, he prefers the 70.3 and full distances the most.

A great racing/training tip from Marty, “Enjoy the journey as you prepare for your races and don’t focus solely on your results in regards to placement. We all participate in this slightly absurd sport for different reasons and we each define our own successes! ”
Which is a great tip when training with a team and racing together, it is easy to compare yourself with teammates.

Marty has a favorite mantra which is,“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined” Henry David Thoreau

Athlete of the Month – July 2020 – Valarie Yoemans

Yes with two “a’s”!
Within minutes of being around Valarie, you will be laughing. She has a great sense of humor and tackles triathlon with the attitude of having fun.

She has been doing tri’s for seven years now and attributes her inspiration for this sport to her husband, you may know him, Jeremy! She says, ” I always think about him when I want to give up during training and it gives me the grit to go on. I want him to be proud of me, and I want to be a good example for our 13 year old daughter, Mia.” Isn’t that just the sweetest. That is a good testament to her attitude and approach she takes to this sport.

Also, this is good for us to thing about, a great racing tip she offers, ” I will say what my Uncle always says, “If you can’t win, then make the person in front of you PUKE!” This is a keeper for sure!
