Athlete of the Month – November 2022 – Nick Atz

Meet Nick Atz!

Name: Nick Atz

Age: 30

Occupation: Accountant (CPA) at Lincoln Financial Group

Years doing triathlon? 3

First Triathlon? High Point Sprint Triathlon in 2019

Your favorite triathlon?  This year was my first 70.3 at Ironman NC 70.3, and that’s been my favorite race so far.

Meal the night before race?  Chipotle (Chicken Burrito w/ white rice, black beans, pico, corn, guac, lettuce)

Race Nutrition?  Usually Skratch mix on the bike and a mix of GU and Honey Stinger Gels.

Favorite Motivational Training Song “The Distance” by CAKE

Favorite mantra? “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

Key Workout?  E3 Endurance Bricks during the summer- I also love a good loop around Salem Lake for long runs.

Best Triathlon training or racing tip?  Always check your bike gear the morning of a race if there’s a hill at the start of the bike course. You’ll usually want to start in the small ring as most courses go uphill after T1 (Belews, Nat Greenes, High Point).

Triathlon literature or other sources of information?  Books: 80/20 Triathlon, Triathletes Training Bible, Triathlete Magazine, That Triathlon Life Youtube/Podcast

Who inspires you?  TTT/E3 Teammates who have already done one of my future goals! I also follow pro triathlon relatively closely and marvel at the different training lifestyles.

Future goal or bucket list race?  The idea of doing a SwimRun has caught my interest recently and plan on doing SwimRun Lake James next spring. I’m also setting my sights on my second 70.3 and my second full marathon next year.

If you see Nick, be sure to congratulate him on being our AOM!
