Athlete of the Month – Dec 2015 – April Rusing

Name: April Rusing
Age: 47
Occupation: retired (hahaha) I used to be a Chef and Culinary school teacher. Prior to that a Commercial Contract Furnishing representative. I plan to open a Culinary School in Kentucky as soon as I get settled here.

Years doing triathlon? My first swim lesson was 7/13 and I bought a bike the week before. It’s ALL Kerrie Ribando’s fault.
First Triathlon? Belews Sprint 9/13 and I was terrified. It was very tough. The thrill of finishing was proof of my mantra.
Your favorite triathlon? So far, Mont-Tremblant. Gorgeous even on a cloudy day.

Meal the night before race? BLAND FOOD. I stop eating fruits and veg three days before a race. I know it’s wrong, but it is what it is. My stomach gets very nervous. The least little thing gives me indigestion. I never get indigestion. Been working on fat adaptation.
Pre-Race Meal? Been working towards fat adaptation. The most recent race was eggs, ham, and the tiniest amount of bread. The hotel was limited.
Race Nutrition? At Beach 2 Battleship, I ate Chia Bars, Cliff Mojo low glycemic and Banana. NO Gels. I am allergic and don’t tolerate them.

Favorite motivational training song? That’s tough. I would say Dreams from Van Halen and AC/DC “For those about to rock.” Depends.

Favorite mantra? Don’t quit. Pain is temporary, quitting is forever.

Key Workout? My Favorite is a long course on the trainer (with a group) during the winter. Or a tough bike ride with Tri friends.

Best Triathlon training or racing tip? Train for the course that is coming up. You will be ready for it. Hills and all.

Triathlon literature or other sources of information? I use the book “IronFit” along with my personal coach information.

Who inspires you? Anyone who obviously works really hard to succeed. I really enjoy seeing “underdog” types go for it. To me, that is where “mind over matter” becomes evident.

Future goal? 140.6 Whistler is on my calendar 7/16. I pray that I am ready. I haven’t figured out which race would be worthy of a bucket list. I think it will be clear once I hit the finish line at Whistler.
